Once after graduate school, I bought a boat for $50 a month (for 12 months) and lived on it for years. I took the money I saved on housing and traveled to exotic places around the world many times. I later sold the boat for $300 to a live aboard family who wanted a separate bedroom for their teenage daughter. Families often live in marinas but most often it is a divorced male who got the boat in the settlement.

I am presently working on a book about how I lived aboard for 12 years. It is cheap, easy, exotic and fun.
